What is eosinophilic asthma? Eosinophilic asthma is a subtype of asthma that is often severe. This subtype is part of type 2 (Th2) asthma and is sometimes also called eos asthma or e-asthma. It is commonly seen in people who develop asthma in adulthood, although it may occur in children and young adults. The eosinophilic asthma phenotype appears to be more common in patients with adult-onset asthma than in those with childhood-onset asthma . The average age of onset is 25–35 years of age [ 33 , 61 , 62 ] and, while adult asthma generally shows a female preponderance [ 64 ], eosinophilic asthma appears to be more equally distributed between males and females [ 33 , 62 ].

The symptoms of eosinophilic asthma can be treated by many asthma medications like bronchodilators, anti-inflammatories and asthma inhaling systems. Because interleukin (IL)-5 is involved in eosinophil differentiation, maturation, recruitment, and activation, it has been identified as an important target for new biologics. 6 Recently, two IL-5 receptor antagonists—reslizumab and mepolizumab—have been approved for severe eosinophilic asthma. 7,8 Effective IL-5 antagonism has been demonstrated to provide control in eosinophilic asthma de Groot JC, Storm H, Amelink M, et al. Inflammation in eosinophilic asthma can cause tissue damage, overproduction of mucus, thickened lung tissue, and hyperresponsive airways. Eosinophilic lung conditions happen when there is a build-up of eosinophils in the air spaces and tissue of the lungs. They are very rare in children. Eosinophilic lung conditions are sometimes called pulmonary eosinophilia or eosinophilic pneumonia . Eosinophilic asthma patients are at risk of more frequent exacerbations, poorer asthma control, and lower lung function. 9-11 Eosinophilic inflammation in the airway tissue 12-14 In eosinophilic asthma, immune cells catalyzed by allergic or nonallergic triggers can lead to the production of various cytokines.
